Display Database Stored Images

Published: 17 May 2018
Last Modified Date: 28 Dec 2022

Issue

When connected to a database containing image data, the images do not display in Tableau Desktop.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop

Resolution

As a possible workaround, one of the following strategies may allow the images to be displayed.

  1. Host the images online and store the URLs in the database, and then use either image roles (available in Tableau Desktop 2022.4 or later), or a dashboard web object to display the URLs
  2. Import the image into Tableau Desktop, or reference it via a URL, for use as a background image
  3. Drop all the images in the \My Tableau Repository\Shapes folder and display them as custom shapes

Cause

The ability to reference and display stored image from a database in Tableau Desktop is not currently built into the product.
