Question

How to update filter settings for all filters in a workbook or dashboard at once?

In the below image, there are 4 filters as a Single Value list and the desire is to set all filters to show only relevant values or set them as a Single Value dropdown.

Currently, it is possible to only change the filter settings individually. How can they be changed in bulk?

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Tableau Cloud

Answer

The ability to format all filters at once is not currently built into Tableau Desktop.

Workaround

Set the filter settings in a blank worksheet and add this filter worksheet to the dashboard.  This worksheet will have settings apply to all applicable dashboards.

The steps are as follows:
1. Make a new blank worksheet and drag the desired dimensions or measures to the Filters shelf.  Right-click and select Show Filter for each.
2. Adjust the filter settings by hovering over each filter and selecting the small downward arrow for a list of options (e.g., Multiple Values (Dropdown)Customize > Show Apply Button, etc.).
3. Add the filter worksheet made in previous steps to the dashboard. The filters will display with the settings you have set within the worksheet.

Note: Apply the filters in the blank filter worksheet to all applicable worksheets.

See the attached workbook and video for further details.
