Answer
When using a legacy perpetual license key, there will be no expiration date in Desktop Manage Product Keys or in Tableau Server TSM but only a maintenance end date. This maintenance end date will determine what version of the software can be used. The maintenance end date is also visible in the Tableau Customer Portal under Licenses and in the "Period End" column.
For example, if a Tableau Desktop key has maintenance through Dec 31, 2021 but no further maintenance has been purchased, it will be possible to install any version approved for security updates that was released prior to Dec 31, 2021. Any version released after the end maintenance date, will not activate.
Tableau Server role-based subscription licenses and Tableau Desktop Creator keys are not perpetual and have expiration dates. The current subscription keys expire if the subscription terms are not extended. There will be an "expiration date" in the Tableau Server TSM UI or in Tableau Desktop Manage Product Keys. Check the Tableau Customer Portal to obtain a new subscription key when the previous key has expired.
