Showing Summary and Detail Together

Product(s): Tableau Desktop
Version(s): All
Last Modified Date: 16 Aug 2016

You can see summary and detail together, on a single graph, by duplicating the data source. For example, you might want to see total sales figures for a group of products along with the figures for the individual groups.

Create a view that shows summary and detail together

Step 1

Open a new workbook and connect to your data source. This example uses the Sample - Superstore data source.

Step 2

Select Data > Duplicate.

The Superstore data source appears twice in the Data pane.

Step 3

In the Data pane, right-click the Superstore data source and select Rename.

Step 4

In the Rename Connection dialog box, in the Name text box, type Totals as the name for this connection, and then click OK.

Step 5

In the Data pane, select Superstore.

Step 6

In the Data pane, double-click the Sales and Order Date fields.

Step 7

Drag the Customer Segment field to Color.

Step 8

In the Data pane, select Totals.

Step 9

From Measures, drag the Sales field to the Rows shelf.

Two identical graphs appear, one above the other. The top one represents Superstore and the bottom one represents Totals.

Distinguish customer segment from total

Step 1

On the Marks card, click the second SUM(Sales) field.

Step 2

In the Details area, right-click Customer Segment and select Remove.

The colored lines for the customer segments are removed from the bottom graph. Only a gray line for Totals appears.

Step 3

Right-click the Y axis of the Totals chart and select Dual Axis.

The Superstore and Totals graphs combine, with axes on both sides of the graph, but the axes have different scales.

Step 4

Right-click the axis on the right side of the graph and select Synchronize Axis.

The scale on the right axis synchronizes with the left axis.

Step 5

In the Data pane, select Superstore.

Step 6

In Dimensions, right-click Customer Segment and select Show Quick Filter.

Step 7

On the Customer Segment Quick Filter, click the menu arrow and select Single Value (List).

On the Quick Filter, you can select All to see the total and the four customer segments, or select an individual segment.
