A group is a field that consists of dimension members that have been combined into higher level categories. For example, often states are grouped into regions using Groups. However, there may be times when the Group option is unavailable on the toolbar. Some common reasons why the group option is not available include the following:
Connected to an OLAP data source: Your workbook is connected to an OLAP data source. Tableau Desktop does not support the Group option for OLAP data sources.
Using values from different dimensions: You have not selected two or more members in the same dimension. The Group option functions within the values of the same field.
Using dimensions in a secondary data source: You are trying to group dimensions from a secondary data source. It is not possible to create groups with dimensions from secondary data sources.
