Beginning with version 7.0, Tableau Server uses a new repository type. When you upgrade from 6.x to the latest version of Tableau Server, migration to the new repository type is handled for you. However, if something unexpected occurs during this process, you may see “Repository Migration Error” error message that will direct you to run the tabadmin command migrate_to_new_repository.
Follow the procedure outlined below to run this command and resolve this error.
Click the Start button, and then select All Programs > Accessories. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator
In the Command Prompt, type one of the following commands depending on your machine:
Note: Replace [version] with the version of Tableau Server that is running on the machine.
On a 32-bit machine: cd C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server\[version]\bin
On a 64-bit machine: cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Tableau\Tableau Server\[version]\bin
Type the following command to stop Tableau Server: tabadmin stop
Type the following command to migrate the repository: tabadmin migrate_to_new_repository
If the migration is successful, no error message will display. The migration does not delete your old repository. If you want to remove it, enter the following command:
tabadmin migrate_to_new_repository --remove-old-repository
The repository won’t be re-migrated, but the old repository will be removed.
Type the following command to start Tableau Server: tabadmin start
