Downloading Tableau Products

When you purchase Tableau you will receive a welcome email that explains what you need to do to download and install the software. Use the included user name and password to log into the Customer Portal so you can get the software and your product key. Follow the instructions below to download and install your products.

Step 1 

Go to the Alternate Download Site. Alternatively, if you have access to the Customer Portal, do the following:

  1. Sign in to the Customer Portal using your e-mail address and the password provided by Tableau.

  2. Click the My Keys link.

  3. In the Products Key column, copy the product key for the Tableau product you want to install.

    Note: If you have not received your sign-in information, click the Help link.

Step 2 

From the list of installation files, click the link to the latest product and version to download Tableau. Alternatively, in the Customer Portal, under Product Downloads, click the link to the product you want to download.

Note: If you are running Tableau Server in your environment, Tableau Desktop should be running the same version. For example, if Tableau Server is version 9.2, Tableau Desktop should be version 9.2 as well; whether Tableau Desktop is running on a Windows computer or a Mac computer does not matter. For complete details on version compatibility, see Desktop and Server Compatibility. If you need to use a past release, past release are available from the Alternate Download Site. If you're already signed into the Customer Portal, click the Alternate Download Site link.

Step 3 

On Windows computers, you are prompted to save or run Tableau Desktop.exe. On a Mac, TableauDesktop.dmg is copied to your Download folder.

Step 4 

On Windows, when the download finishes, double-click the installer file to begin the installation. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the product.


For Tableau Desktop, the first screen will look like the following:

On a Mac, you will be prompted to drag the Tableau Desktop icon to your Applications folder:

For Tableau Server, the first screen will look like the following:

Step 5 

When you are done installing Tableau, you will need to activate and register the product. Click Activate the product.

Step 6 

Click the text box and press Ctrl + V (Cmd-V on a Mac) to paste your product key. You can also right-click (control-click on a Mac) in the text box and select Paste. When finished, Activate.

Note: Your product key should still be in the clipboard from step 3. If needed, repeat steps 1-3 to recopy the product key from the Customer Portal.

Important: If you are upgrading versions and have paid your maintenance since the last time you completed offline activation, please contact Tableau Customer Service first. If you are working offline, please refer to the Offline Activation Help article for information on how to activate Tableau.

Step 7 

Click the Register button to continue on with the registration process.

Step 8 

Register the product by typing your Name, Company, Email address, and any other necessary information. Then click the Register button.

Step 9 

When registration is successful, click Continue to start using the product. If you are installing Tableau Server, see the Server Help for more detailed instructions on installing and setting up the Server. If you would like to set up a distributed environment you will need to return to the portal and download the Tableau Server Worker installer. The Server Help explains how to install and set up both your primary and worker machines for this kind of installation.
