Issue

When publishing a workbook, the following error might occur:

You do not have permission to publish to this server. Contact your Tableau Server administrator for access.

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Tableau Desktop

Resolution

As a Tableau Server administrator, perform the following steps:

Confirm the user can publish to the site

  1. Log in to Tableau Server.
  2. Navigate to Users > (user name) > ... > Site Role > Publisher.
Note: If Tableau Server has multiple sites configured, ensure the user has the Publisher permissions for the site that hosts the desired project.

Confirm the user has project level permissions

  1. Log in to Tableau Server.
  2. Navigate to Content > Projects > (project name) > … > Permissions > (user name) > … > Edit, and then set Project Permissions to Publisher.

Confirm the group the user belongs to is not explicitly denied publish permissions

  1. Log in to Tableau Server.
  2. Navigate to Content > Projects > (project name) > … > Permissions > (group) > … > Edit, and then set Project Permissions to Publisher or None

Cause

The user does not have the necessary publishing rights.

Additional Information

A project leader will have implicit permissions to publish to that project, but will need explicit permission to publish to other projects.
