Error: "Internal error: An unexpected error occurred and the operation could not be completed" With Splunk Database in Cross Database Join

Issue

When opening a workbook or refreshing an extract that uses Splunk in a cross-database join, the following error might occur:
"Internal error: An unexpected error occurred and the operation could not be completed"

Additionally, another message might come up saying that one or more specific worksheets will not be loaded because the data source could not be opened.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 10 and later versions
  • Splunk in a cross database join

Resolution

  1. Make separate data sources from the component connections in the join and use blending instead.
  2. Extract the Splunk data and use the TDE file in the join instead of the direct Splunk connection.

Cause

Workbooks that were created during that window in the beta or in Tableau Desktop 10.1.3-10.1.6 will cause errors to occur in newer releases since Splunk is not allowed in cross-database joins.
