Unable to Sync All Active Directory Groups Using tabcmd syncgroup

Published: 30 Jan 2013
Last Modified Date: 13 Apr 2017

Issue

The tabcmd syncgroup command only synchronizes one Active Directory group at a time.

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Active Directory

Resolution

Use the following workaround.
  1. Create a batch script to run the commands. The following is an example script that combines signing in, synchronizing one group, and signing out. The script uses the administrator account credentials.

    “C:\Program Files (x86)\Tableau\Tableau Server\8.0\bin\tabcmd” login -s <servername> -u <username> -p <password>
    “C:\Program Files (x86)\Tableau\Tableau Server\8.0\bin\tabcmd” syncgroup "<group>"
    “C:\Program Files (x86)\Tableau\Tableau Server\8.0\bin\tabcmd” logout
  2. Use Windows Task Scheduler to schedule the script. For more information, see the Scheduling section in the Server Backup and Maintenance Automation article in the Tableau knowledge base.

Cause

The ability to synchronize multiple groups using tabcmd syncgroup is not currently built into the product.
