Unable to Refresh Published Data Sources Using Windows Authentication

Issue

When authenticating using the Run As account, the following error message is received after refreshing a published data extract:

[Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 11.0][SQL Server]The SELECT permission was denied on the object '<OBJECTNAME>',
database '<DATEBASENAME>', scheme 'SCHEMATYPE'
The table "[<SCHEMATYPE>].[<OBJECTNAME>]" does not exist.
Unable to connect to server "<SERVERNAME>". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested
database.

Environment

  • Tableau Server 8.1.1
  • Windows Server 2012
  • Windows Authentication
  • MS SQL Server

Resolution

  • Verify that the Run As User account has been granted the appropriate permissions on the machine hosting Tableau Server
  • Verify that the Run As User account has been granted tje 'db_datareader' permission to the desired MSSQL database

Cause

The Run As User which is being used to authenticate the published extract does not have the appropriate permissions to the MSSQL database.
