Issue

When joining and unioning multiple CSV file simultaneously, the following errors may occur when extracting or refreshing:

'Tableau Data Engine Error: 40696: The system cannot find the file specified'

Or

'Internal Error - An unexpected error occurred and the operation could not be completed.
Unable to create extract'

Environment

Tableau Desktop 10.1, 10.2, 9.3.14

Resolution

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 10.2.2, 10.1.8 or 10.0.10. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Desktop

Option 2

Place the group of files that are forming the joined unions into separate locations on the Drive. For example :
  • CSV Wildcard union on the left of the Join : place files in a "Left join CSV files"
  • CSV Wildcard union on the right of the join : olace the file in a separate (not child) folder named "Right join CSV files"

Option 3

Join the union extracts instead.
  1. Create two separate connections:
    • First data-source connection to the files forlimg the Wildcard union on the left of the join
    • Second data-source connection to the files forming the Wildcard union on the right of the join
  2. Create and save an extract of both connections
  3. With a third data-source connection connect to the extracts created on step b) and perform the join
