Logging on to Tableau Online using a Tableau account which previously worked may be failing, because failed login attempts are causing the Tableau account to become temporarily locked. You may receive the following error message:
Your account is temporarily locked. To continue, click Forgot Password.
To confirm the issue is an account lockout, attempt logging on to Tableau's website at using the same email address. If the account is locked, the following message will occur:
You have tried logging in too many times. Your account has been locked for 10 minutes.

Additionally, when you are attempting to login via tabcmd and your accounts becomes locked, the following error message will appear:
Signing in...
*** Not authorized
User account is locked. (errorCode=16)

  • Tableau Online
  • Tableau authentication

If the account is locked, use the "forgot password" link on the page to reset the account's password. Resetting the password will also remove the account lockout immediately.

A security improvement was made to Tableau accounts on April 24 2017 to improve account lockout following multiple failed login attempts to Tableau Online. After 9 failed logins, accounts are locked - first for 10 minutes, then on subsequent failed logins the lockout period increases to 100, 1000, 10000 minutes.
