Unable to Edit Data Connection for Google Analytics on Tableau Server

Issue

Unable to edit Data Connection for Google Analytics on Tableau Server because Google Analytics "Edit Connection" is disabled.

Environment

  • Tableau Server

Resolution

To resolve, follow the steps listed in Set up OAuth for Google.

Alternative Workaround:

From Tableau Desktop, connect to Google Analytics and republish the data source to Tableau Server.

An OAuth token is not required in Tableau Desktop if the Google Analytics account is able to be authenticated through the web interface 2-factor authentication within Tableau Desktop whereas the Tableau Server is not able to display the web interface for the two-factor authentication.

Cause

Google Analytics has not been set up with OAuth token.

Additional Information

The connection to Google BigQuery and Google Analytics is created through an OAuth access token. Database credentials do not need to be stored in Tableau, and all users connect through this access token, including Tableau Desktop users who want to create or edit workbooks using this connection.
