Unable to Change Owner of Workbook on the Server

Issue

If the published workbook contains external files or if the workbook used to be connected to a published data source before it was published to server, when you try to change owner of the workbook on Tableau Server, the following message might appear at the top of the screen:
 
Could not change the owner of any of the selected workbooks to '<USER>'.
The ownership of 1 workbook was not changed.  View details.

If you click View details, the following error message displays:
 
The ownership of 1 workbook was not changed.
An error occurred while changing ownership of workbook '[NAME]' 

Environment

  • Tableau Server 8.2 and 8.3
  • Workbook that includes external files (see Step 9 in How to Publish Workbooks to a Tableau Server)
    or
    Workbook that was connected to a published data source in Tableau Desktop before it was published to Tableau Server

Resolution

Use one of the following options to help you solve the issue: 

Option 1: Download the workbook and re-publish it from Tableau Desktop

Option 2: Upgrade to Tableau Server 9.0

Cause

This behavior is a known issue that has been corrected in more recent releases.
