Error "an error occurred while connecting to Tableau Data Extract" Using .twbx With Live Connections to Excel or Text Files

Last Modified Date: 07 Jun 2017

Issue

The following error occurs when attempting to modify a packaged workbook (.twbx) with an Excel or Text data source which was created by using Save As > Packaged Workbook:
an error occurred while connecting to Tableau Data Extract
Path not found

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Excel files
  • Text files

Resolution

When using live connections to file-based data sources, use Save As to only create a .twb, not a .twbx.
To create a .twbx,
Extract your data
Export a packaged workbook using File >

Make sure that when using live connections to local files, that the "Save As" format is specifically .twb, not .twbx, to retain the correct filepath.
If necessary to create a .twbx:
Extract data first
Use File > Export Packaged Workbook

Cause

A live connection to local files (.xslx,, .txt., .csv) creates a temporary "shadow extract" in the Temp folder. Saving the workbook as a .twbx using the "Save As" menu can leave the workbook connected to to the shadow extract instead of the local file it was originally connected to.After the shadow extract is automatically removed, errors occur when the workbook is next opened.
