Tableau Desktop Quits Unexpectedly When Placing Measure on the View

Issue

When dragging a measure from an Excel worksheet into the view, Tableau Desktop quits unexpectedly.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 10.0.1
  • Mac OS
  • Excel

Resolution

As a workaround, remove the error values ( "#NUM!" or "#ERR!") from the Excel file within Excel itself.
Either do a Find and Replace for the values, or create a new column and use a formula like below for the entire column in question:

=IF(ISNUMBER(cell), cell, 0)

Cause

This behavior is related to a known issue currently under investigation.

Additional Information

The data field being dragged contains some type of Excel error value like "#NUM!" or "#ERR!". The Excel data values are actually the text of the error, not a returned error from a formula (the cell is not a formula, but actually the text) which usually means the excel file was generated from a third party piece of software.
