Last Modified Date: 13 Nov 2017

Issue

When connecting to a table that contains self-referencing foreign keys of the following types, Tableau Desktop might become unresponsive:

ALTER TABLE [SchemaName].[TableName] WITH CHECK ADD
CONSTRAINT [FK_TableName_TableName] FOREIGN KEY([Id])
REFERENCES [SchemaName].[TableName] ([Id])

Environment

Tableau Desktop 9.3.2 - 9.3.5

Resolution

Option 1:

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 9.3.6 or a newer version. For more information, see Upgrade Tableau Desktop.

Option 2:

  1. Remove the self-referencing key from the table.
  2. Create a view and connect to the table directly.

Cause

This behavior is related to known issue 535241 which has been corrected in more recent versions.
