Issue

When connecting to an Excel file, strings start with "=" and include "E" or "D" is parsed as "1.#INF" or "inf".

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 9.3 and later.
  • Excel

Resolution

  • Delete "=" from the beginning of the string.
  • Copy and paste the values of underlying Excel file into a CSV, and then export CSV data back into the Excel file.

Cause

Tableau is reading these values in as scientific notation, so 16D44 or 16E44 are being interpreted as 16 *(10^44).
