Slow LOD Query When Set with EXASOL

Published: 20 Jul 2016
Last Modified Date: 20 Sep 2017

Issue

When using a Level of Detail (LOD) calculation based on a non-key value with a large domain in an ExaSol connection, the query execution may be slow.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 9.3.0-9.3.9, 10.0.0-10.0.3, 10.1.0-10.1.1
  • EXASOL

Resolution

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 9.3.11, 10.0.5, 10.1.3 or a later version. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Desktop

Option 2

If you unable to upgrade, please set the underlying field to be a key value.

Cause

The query generated for appending LoD results in EXASOL, adds a NULL check on a join clause. This null check ultimately slows down execution time if the join field is a non-key value. Please note that this behavior was related to a known issue (ID: 540561) that has been fixed in a recent version of Tableau Desktop.
