Tableau Server Stops After Running Out of Disk Space

Issue

A Tableau Server machine’s hard drive runs out of space, and Tableau Server stops. Starting Tableau Server results in the following error in the Command Prompt window:

***Failed to load configuration from C:/ProgramData/Tableau/TableauServer/data/tabscv/config/connections.yml

Environment

Tableau Server 8.0

Resolution

Complete the following steps:

  1. On the server machine, open the Command Prompt as an administrator.
  2. Change to the Tableau Server bin directory:

    cd C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server\<version>\bin

Note: If you installed 32-bit Tableau Server on a 64-bit operating system, the path will be C:\Program Files (x86)\Tableau\Tableau Server\<version>\bin

  3. Run the following command to confirm that Tableau Server is stopped:

    tabadmin status -v

  4. Check to make sure the tabsvc and Tablicsrv services are running. For more information, see Verify Tableau Service Settings.
  5. If the services are running, right-click the service names, and then select Stop.
  6. At the command prompt, run the following commands, in order:
    • tabadmin configure
    • tabadmin start

Cause

Sometimes when the drive runs out of disk space, Tableau Server stops but tabsvc and Tablicsrv are still running. Tableau Server gets into a confused state and cannot start.
