Numbers Appear as Strings When Viewing Exported Crosstab in Excel

Published: 01 May 2014
Last Modified Date: 30 Sep 2016

Issue

When exporting a view to crosstab, the original format of the view is retained, which might cause some fields to be interpreted incorrectly in Excel. For example, when the view is formatted to show "300K", in Excel the .csv file is interpreted as having a string "300K" instead of the number "300,000".

Environment

Tableau Server

Resolution

Export the underlying data instead of the crosstab by using any one of the following options:
  • In browser, use Export > Data > Download All Rows as Text File
  • From a command line, use tabcmd get "<name>.csv" or tabcmd export <name> --csv
Note: When exporting the underlying data, the formatting will match the "Default Number Format". For more information, see Exporting Precise Data from Tableau Server

Cause

Export > Crosstab was intentionally designed to retain the crosstab formatting as the tool Export > Data exports the underlying data based on the Default Number Format.
