Newly Added Column Does Not Appear After Refreshing Published Data Source

Issue

When adding fields to published data source, these changes might not be reflected in workbooks when refreshing connections to the original published connection.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Tableau Server

Resolution

Option 1

Unhide the fields
  1. Right-click the Data pane and select Show Hidden Fields
  2. Click on the added field and select Unhide field

Option 2

Use Custom SQL
  1. Connect to the published data source in a new workbook 
  2. Go back to original workbook and click Edit Connection 
  3. Add the desired fields using the Multiple Tables option 
  4. Click the Custom SQL dialog 
  5. Click OK to exit the dialog box 
  6. Publish the connection, overwriting the original published data source 
  7. In the new workbook, refresh the published data source
