Multiple Filter Selection Gets Deselected After Reopening a Workbook or Refreshing a Data Source

Published: 26 Apr 2017
Last Modified Date: 25 May 2017

Issue

When certain calculated fields are used as multiple-select filters with file-based data sources, any combination of selections that is neither "All" nor "None" will be cleared upon refreshing the data connection or reopening the workbook; and the view will be become blank.

Most instances of this behavior affect calculated fields that use IF/THEN logic with all THEN results being string literals, for example:
IF [A] THEN "Alpha"
ELSEIF [B] THEN "Beta"
ELSE "Omega"
END

Environment

Tableau Desktop

Resolution

Option 1:

Upgrade to one of the following versions of Tableau Desktop or Tableau Server: 10.2.2, 10.1.8 or 10.0.10. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Desktop and/or Upgrading Tableau Server

Option 2:

Change the IF/THEN calculated field to return integers instead of strings and then alias the return values.

Cause

This behavior is related to a known issue (ID: 644115) that has been fixed in a recent version of Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server.
