Mismatched Rows in Linking Field When Blending

Published: 23 May 2016
Last Modified Date: 29 Sep 2017

Issue

When using a field with mismatched values (for example, one data source has some misspellings) as a linking field when data blending, Tableau Desktop does not match the rows, even if the values have been corrected by using aliases.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Blended data

Resolution

Option 1: Change the values in the data source to match.

Option 2: Create a calculated field to correct the mismatched values, and then edit the data relationship to replace the original field with the calculated field.

For example, if  [Name] field has misspellings in one data source then create a calculation like the following:

IF [Name] = "misspelled field 1"
THEN "correct spelling field 1"
ELSEIF [Name] = "misspelled field 2"
THEN "correct spelling field 2"
ELSE [Name]
END

Cause

Tableau Desktop uses the data source values of a field to match rows. Even if the aliases have been corrected, Tableau Desktop will not match up rows that do not have the exact same data source value.
