Live Excel Connection Points to Temporary File or Directory

Published: 27 Jan 2015
Last Modified Date: 28 Apr 2017

Issue

When working with a packaged workbook (.twbx) with a connection to an Excel file, the workbook might be pointed to a temporary file.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Excel live connection
  • Packaged workbook

Resolution

In order to refresh the data source and use the original location, use a .twb instead.

Cause

Tableau packaged workbook files (.twbx) store both the workbook and the associated data source in a zipped format. When the workbook is opened, the data connection points to a temporary version of the data source file and not the original document.

Additional Information

  1. Right-click on the data source and select Properties.
  2. Note the file path points to a temporary file directory such as:
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\TableauTemp\3895852884\Data\1r1eee2085fhi11czgnjz0cea8kz
