ISMEMBEROF() Returns Unexpected Results When Filtering Active Directory or Local Auth Groups

Published: 12 Jul 2016
Last Modified Date: 09 Sep 2016

Issue

When using the ISMEMBEROF() function to filter users in an Active Directory or Local Auth group, the resulting view might not filter users as expected.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Tableau Server 9.1.0 - 9.1.11, 9.2.0 - 9.2.9, 9.3.0 - 9.3.3
  • Active Directory
  • User group that contains "@" in the name

Resolution

Option 1

Upgrade Tableau Server to one of the following versions or higher:
  • 9.1.12
  • 9.2.10
  • 9.3.4
  • 10.0.0
For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Server.

Option 2

If unable to upgrade, edit Active Directory groups to remove the @ symbol from the group name.

Cause

Tableau Server was failing to return the correct results to Tableau Desktop because the "@" character was being read as a separator between the group name and the domain.

Additional Information

This issue occurs when the group name itself contains an "@" character. The issue is not related to the @ symbol which separates the group name from the domain. For example:

Issue:
Group Name: ex@mple
Group Email: ex@mple@domain.com

Non-issue:
Group Name: example
Group Email: example@domain.com
