Hidden Marks Not Retained When Workbook is Saved or Published

Issue

When using the Never Show setting to hide marks in a view where those marks are also part of a set of data that is hidden or displayed based on a filter or a parameter, edited marks might not be hidden when the workbook is saved and next opened.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Tableau Server

Resolution

Use one of the following workarounds:
  • Save or publish the workbook when the hidden marks are included in the view so the setting is included in the workbook XML.
  • Create a calculated field to return a null value, which will not show a mark on the view.

Cause

This behavior is by design. The Show Marks setting must be included in the workbook XML in order to retain the settings. Settings are not saved for marks that are not visible when the workbook is saved.
