Extract Not Found When Opening Workbook from Different Operating System

Published: 27 Jun 2014

Issue

When opening a workbook that uses a data extract saved to a network location, and where the workbook was created with a different operating system, the data extract might not be found.

Environment

Tableau Desktop

Resolution

Try one of the following workarounds:

Option 1:
Save the Tableau Data Extract (.tde) file in the same folder as the workbook (.twb). The workbook will open successfully between Windows and Mac if the .twb and .tde are in the same location.

Option 2:
Use packaged workbooks (.twbx) or download published workbook from Tableau Server and re-publish.

Cause

File paths for network locations are interpreted/saved differently between Windows and Mac. A data extract saved to a network location from one operating system will have a file path specific to that operating system, which might result in other operating systems being unable to locate the file.
