Excluding Values from a Quick Filter

Issue

How to limit the values available for a quick filter.

Environment

Tableau Desktop

Resolution

Option 1: Sets

The following instructions can be reviewed in the workbook attached below.
  1. Create a set of the dimensions that should remain in the quick filter.
  2. Place the set on the filter shelf. The drop-down menu of the quick filter will be limited to the dimensions within the set.
Set filter would be applied before an exclusion filter, therefore the set filter will limit the values that appear in the quick filter.

Note: Any fields not included in the set would be excluded from the view.

Option 2: Exclusion Filter Using Only Relevant Values

  1. Create two filters, one to exclude the undesired values and the second to show the allowed values.
  2. Right-click on the dimension, and select Duplicate.
  3. Place the copy on the filter shelf and set to exclude the undesired values.
  4. Place the original dimension on the filter shelf.
  5. Right-click on the dimension on the filter shelf and select Show Filter.
  6. Right-click on the filter card and select Only relevant values.
Note: Any fields excluded from the view would be removed from underlying data.

Option 3: Parameters

Use a parameter as a filter. For example, create a parameter with the list of desired values. Then create a calculation such as [PARAMETER] = [DIMENSION] and place the calculation on the filter shelf. Set to True.

Note: This option would restrict the available underlying data and not allow for the selection of multiple items from the drop-down list.

Cause

Limiting the options that appear in a drop down list of a quick filer is not currently a functionality in Tableau Desktop.
