Errors "Service failed to start" and "Unable to connect to postgres" Starting Tableau Server

When you try to start Tableau Server, the following error might occur:
Service failed to start properly. Run "tabadmin status -v" and see "tabadmin.log" for more details.

In addition, the following error appears in the tabadmin.log file:
Unable to connect to postgres 
RuntimeError: The driver encountered an unknown error: org.postgresql.util.PSQLException: Connection refused. Check that the hostname and port are correct and that the postmaster is accepting TCP/IP connections.


  • Tableau Server 8.2.0 - 8.2.3
  • Tableau Server 8.1.0 - 8.1.11
  • Tableau Server 8.0.0 - 8.0.15


Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Server 8.2.4 in the 8.2.x branch, Tableau Server 8.1.12 in the 8.1.x branch, or Tableau Server 8.0.16 in the 8.0.x branch. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Server in the Tableau Knowledge Base.

Option 2

Restart the computer running Tableau Server, and then start Tableau Server.

Option 3

Sign in to the computer running Tableau Server as the Tableau Server Run As User.


In Tableau Server 8.2.0 - 8.2.3, 8.1.0 - 8.1.11, and 8.0.15 and earlier versions, running tabadmin start required that the user have permission to run executables.
