Errors: "No Tableau Server user found" or "Bad Protocol error" After Loosing Connection When Working with Published Data Sources

Issue

While working with a published data source in Tableau Desktop, the connection might be lost and the following errors might be returned:

HTTPException 401
No Tableau Server user found


or

Bad protocol error

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 10.2.0 - 10.2.2 & 10.3.0 - 10.3.1
  • Tableau Online
  • Tableau Server

Resolution

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 10.2.3 or higher versions (if available). For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Desktop

Cause

Connection to Tableau Server or Tableau Online was lost and Tableau Desktop failed to prompt to reconnect.
