Errors "Connectionless Failure" and "Cannot evaluate user filter; no current user or group" Refreshing Published Extract

When refreshing a published extract, the refresh might fail and the following error might occur:

Connectionless Failure
Additionally, the following error is logged in the Background Task view in Tableau Server:

Cannot evaluate user filter; no current user or group


  • Tableau Desktop 9.2.7, 9.3.0 and earlier versions
  • Tableau Server
  • Tableau Data Extracts


Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 9.2.8, 9.3.1 or a newer version. For more information, see Upgrade Tableau Desktop

Option 2

  • Publish the data source directly to Tableau Server, and then connect the workbook to the published data source.
  • If a connection already exists, connect to the published data source, use Replace Data Source to switch the published data source with the extract connection, and then close the extract connection.

Option 3

Use a live connection to the data source, apply the user filter as a data source filter.


This behavior is related to a known issue which has been corrected in more recent versions.
