Issue

When adding worker machines to an environment where SAML is enabled, the following error might occur

Worker initialization failed

Additionally, the tabadmin logs will contain entries similar to the following:

Handling MultiCommand::ReportableError Error processing template wgserver/samlspmetadata.xml.templ
No such file or directory - D:/Program Files/Tableau/Tableau Server/SAML/star_ellucian_com.crt

Error processing template wgserver/samlspmetadata.xml.templ
No such file or directory - D:/Program Files/Tableau/Tableau Server/SAML/star_ellucian_com.crt

Environment

  • Tableau Server 8.2, 8.3, 9.0, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3
  • SAML

Resolution

Ensure the key, certificate and IdP metadata files for SAML have be added to all worker machines configured to run Application Server (VizPortal):
  1. Stop Tableau Server and remove the worker computer from configuration.
  2. Create a directory on the root drive of the primary computer (e.g. C:\SAML) and move the SAML key, certificate and IdP metadata files to this directory.
  3. Update the SAML configuration dialog to use this new directory and start Tableau Server.
  4. Create a directory in the same location on the worker machine and copy the SAML key, certificate and IdP metadata files to this directory.

Cause

The key, certificate and IdP metadata files for SAML are missing from the worker computers running the Application Server (VizPortal).
