Error "Unable to insert into table [<Temporary Table Name>] because the data is too wide for column" Connecting to Stored Procedure

Issue

When opening a stored procedure, the following error might occur:
 
Unable to insert into table [<Temporary Table Name>] because the data is too wide for column <Column Name>

Unable to connect to the server "<Server>". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • MS SQL Server
  • Stored Procedure

Resolution

Remove commas from any column names in the stored procedure.

Cause

The comma serves as a delimiter in some situations and builds a column (with length zero) where one should not exist.
