Error "Unable to connect" using MS SQL Server and Tableau Server on Linux

Issue

When connecting to live MS SQL data sources using the FreeTDS driver provided by Tableau for Tableau Server on Linux, the following error may occur:

“[unixODBC][FreeTDS][SQL Server]Unable to connect: Adaptive Server is unavailable or does not exist
[unixODBC][FreeTDS][SQL Server]Unable to connect: Adaptive Server is unavailable or does not exist
[unixODBC][FreeTDS][SQL Server]Unable to connect to data source”

Environment

  • Tableau Server on Linux
  • MS SQL Server
  • FreeTDS driver

Resolution

Configure the MS SQL Server computer to accept TCP connections over port 1433.

Cause

The FreeTDS driver is not able to connect to the MS SQL Server because port 1433 is not open and accepting TCP connections.
