Issue

When attempting to render view with a live connection to MySQL published to Tableau Online, the following error might occur:

TableauException: Unable to connect to the ODBC Data Source. Check that the necessary drivers are installed and that the connection properties are valid. [MySQL][ODBC 5.3(w) Driver]Can't connect to MySQL server on '<IP>' (10060) Unable to connect to the server "<IP>". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

Environment

  • Tableau Online
  • MySQL
  • Amazon RDS

Resolution

  1. Add Tableau Online to your data provider’s list of approved IP addresses. For more information, see Tableau Online IP addresses under Keep Data Fresh.
  2. Work with your database administrator to confirm that remote access is enabled in MySQL.

Cause

Either the IP address used by Tableau Online is blocked, or the database does not allow remote access.
