"Unable to connect to the server" Error When Using MySQL

Issue

When connecting to MySQL from Tableau Desktop, you may see the following error messages:
 
MySQL connection
 
The drivers necessary to connect to this database server are not properly installed.  Visit http://www.tableausoftware.com/drivers to download driver setup files.
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified.
Unable to connect to the server "<server>". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.
Unable to connect to the server. Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.
 

ODBC connection
 
The drivers necessary to connect to this database server are not properly installed. 
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] The specified DSN contains an architecture mismatch between the Driver and Application. 
Unable to connect to the server. Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database. 
 

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 8.0, 8.0.1
  • MySQL 4.1

Resolution

To resolve this issue, do the following:
  1. Uninstall MySQL ODBC 5.2.x drivers. 
  2. Install MySQL ODBC 3.51 drivers, which is available from the Drivers page.

Cause
