Issue

After attempting to connect to an Excel file on Tableau Desktop, no table sheets and data is loaded to the data source page. Additionally, when you navigate to a new "Sheet", a red exclamation mark appears on the data source name and the following error message appears when you hover over on the data source name:
"There was a problem connecting to the data source. Try editing the data source."

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 10.2.0
  • Windows 10
  • Excel

Resolution

Opening the excel file with Legacy Connection resolves the issue.
  1. Connect to "Excel" from Tableau Desktop and navigate to the folder that contains the desired Excel file.
  2. Click the Open drop down menu in the Open dialog box
  3. Select Open with Legacy Connection. For more information about the Excel connector, see Excel in Tableau Help.
All the table sheets and the data should appear on the Data Source page.
