Error "The view snapshot in this email could not be properly rendered" in Subscription Email

Issue

When viewing a subscription email, the embedded image might not load and the following message might be displayed:

The view snapshot in this email could not be properly rendered. To see the view online go to...

Also, Tableau Server logs may contain an error similar to the following:
Essbase user [<user name>] Authentication Fails against the Shared Services Server with Error [EPMCSS-00301: Failed to authenticate user. Invalid credentials. Enter valid credentials.]
Errors occurred while trying to load the workbook "<workbook name>". The load was not able to complete successfully.

Environment

  • Tableau Server 

Resolution

Try one or more of the following options:
  • Click the Download full message or Load More button located at the bottom of the email.
  • Work with your local IT team to increase the fixed maximum message size limitations on the SMTP server configured to send subscription emails. 
  • (Tableau Server Admin) Verify the subscriber account has the permission to access the views/workbook on Tableau Server.
  • (With Publisher permissions) Republish the workbook with valid database credentials.

Cause

The file size of the view in the subscription email exceeds the SMTP server fixed maximum file size limit. 

Additional Information

View Data window will show:

Tableau- Sheets in Workbook: 552 5.3.4
Message size exceeds fixed maximum message size java.lang.RuntimeException:Some subscriptions were not sent successfully

Server logs will show:

ERROR com.tableausoftware.model.workgroup.service.subscriptions.SubscriptionRunner - Error sending email. Details: com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPSendFailedException: 552 5.3.4 Message size exceeds fixed maximum message size
