Error "The program can't start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer." After Upgrading

Issue

After upgrading Tableau Server or Tableau Desktop, the application does not start. After launching the application or entering any command, the following error occurs:

The program can't start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer.

The same error may also occur with mfc140.dll listed.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, download and install the latest Windows update for your operating system, and download and install any available updates for Universal C Runtime.

Cause

The dll api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll or mfc140.dll is missing. The error message is not specific to Tableau Server and can also occur with other programs that make use of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015.
