Error "The drivers... are not properly installed"

Issue

When you try to connect to a data source from Tableau Desktop or publish a workbook or data conenction to Tableau Server, you receive an error message similar to the following: 
The drivers necessary to connect to this database server are not properly installed 

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Tableau Server

Resolution

  • Ensure that you are using the supported drivers. Previously installed database drivers used by other software may not be compatible with Tableau. To download the correct drivers for Tableau, see Drivers & Activation
  • Check for version specific drivers. Some Tableau updates will require you to use a newer version of a driver. Check Drivers & Activation for the most current drivers.
  • Validate driver bit version. Some databases require 64-bit drivers for 64-bit versions of Tableau. For more information, see Drivers for 64-bit Tableau.
  • Ensure that drivers are installed on the correct computer. To create a connection to a data source from Tableau Desktop, drivers need to be installed on the computer running Tableau Desktop. If a saved workbook is opened on a different computer, the appropriate drivers need to be installed on that computer as well. 
  • Ensure that drivers are installed on all computers running Tableau Server. If Tableau Server is running in a distributed environment, the necessary drivers must be installed on the primary and all workers. 

Cause

The drivers necessary to connect to the database were not installed.
