Error: "TableauException: INTERNAL ERROR" Received When Viewing a Workbook With a Published Data Source

Published: 19 Jan 2017

Issue

When attempting to view a workbook with a published data source, the following error might occur:

An unexpected error occurred. If you continue to receive this error please contact your Tableau Server Administrator.
TableauException: INTERNAL ERROR

Environment

  • Tableau Server 10
  • Published data source

Resolution

  1. Open the affected workbook in Tableau Desktop and revise the data field that returns an error from the log field.
  2. Explicit the data type by wrapping the field with data type conversion functions like STR(), INT() and FLOAT().
  3. Then, reconnect the data source and republish it to the server.

Cause

When the data source is published to Tableau Server, it goes through a different path to parse the fields in the workbook.

From the vizqlserver log entries, one of the fields has an ambiguous data type. In this example [PR ID] has an invalid data type when parsing the fields: {...{...[none:PR ID:nk]"}}
