Error "Tableau has stopped working" and Tableau Exits Unexpectedly During Installation

Issue

When you try to install Tableau Server or Tableau Desktop on a computer running the 64-bit version of Windows 7 SP1, the application might unexpectedly exit during licensing check, and the following error might appear:
Tableau has stopped working.

In addition, the following information might appear in the Windows event log:
Faulting application name: tabsrvlic.exe, version: 9000.15.318.1720, time stamp: 0x550a2915
Faulting module name: MSVCR120.dll, version: 12.0.21005.1, time stamp: 0x524f83ff
Exception code: 0xc000001d

or
Faulting application name: tableau.exe, version: 9000.15.318.1720, time stamp: 0x550a2915
Faulting module name: MSVCR120.dll, version: 12.0.21005.1, time stamp: 0x524f83ff
Exception code: 0xc000001d

Environment

  • Tableau Server 9.0
  • Tableau Desktop 9.0
  • 64-bit version of Windows 7 SP1

Cause

This behavior is related to a known issue in Windows 7.
