Issue

You are unable to automatically log into Tableau Server and the following error occurs:

Tableau Server could not authenticate you automatically.
Sign in using your Tableau Server credentials.

Additionally, the following behaviors are true:

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Active Directory Authentication
  • "Enabling Automatic Login"

Resolution

Verify that a domain nickname is the same as a domain name. For more information about domain names, see tabcmd listdomains in Tableau Help.

If the domain name and the domain nickname do not match, please correct the nickname using the "tabcmd editdomain" command. For more information about the "tabcmd editdomain" command, see tabcmd editdomain in Tableau Help.

For example, auto login should not work with the following nickname:
  • domain fqdn: testgroup.local
  • nickname: TESTSUPP
Correct the nickname to:
  • domain fqdn: testgroup.local
  • nickname: TESTGROUP

Cause

Tableau Server sees domain nickname for "Enabling Automatic Login" authentication. If a domain nickname and a domain name are not the same, "Enabling Automatic Login" will likely fail.
