Error "Tableau Reader has stopped working" Opening Packaged Workbook

Issue

When opening a packaged workbook in Tableau Reader, the following error might occur:

Environment

Resolution

Option 1

Create an extract of the live data source using Tableau Desktop. 
  1. Open the original workbook in Tableau Desktop. 
  2. From the Data menu, choose the data source and select Extract Data
  3. Click Extract
  4. Select File > Save As
  5. In the Save As dialog box, select Tableau Packaged Workbook (*.twbx) from the Save as type drop-down menu. 
  6. Open the new packaged workbook from Tableau Reader.

Option 2

Ensure the most up-to-date versions of the graphics drivers and associated software are installed and disable accelerated graphics in Tableau Reader:
  1. Navigate to Help > Settings and Performance > Enable Accelerated Graphics.
  2. Clear the selection.  

Option 3

Perform an uninstall and clean reinstall Tableau Reader:
  1. Close all instances of Tableau Reader.
  2. In Windows, navigate to Control Panel > Programs and Features to uninstall Tableau Reader.
  3. Delete the Tableau Reader folder in the Program Files directory, for example, C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Reader.
  4. Reboot the computer.
  5. Download the latest version of Tableau Reader from the Tableau Reader Product page.
  6. Install Tableau Reader with administrator permissions.

 

Cause

  • Tableau Reader does not support live connections to data sources.
  • Outdated device drivers or accelerated graphics settings were causing unresolvable software conflicts.
  • The installation of Tableau Reader has become corrupt.
