Issue

When connecting to PowerPivot the following error appears:

"[Tableau PowerPivot AddIn] Unable to connect to the MS PowerPivot data source. Couldn't find valid MS PowerPivot data in the workbook you specified.

Unable to connect to the server. Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database."

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Microsoft PowerPivot

Resolution

  1. In the PowerPivot screen click on the "PivotTable" ribbon.
  2. This will cause a linkage between excel and the PowerPivot data, and a PowerPivot Field List should appear inside your excel workbook.
  3. Once that is done, save your workbook and try connect to it again from Tableau.

Cause

PowerPivot data wasn't linked to an Excel worksheet. Tableau Desktop requires that the PowerPivot data is linked to an Excel worksheet.
