Error "Tableau Exception: ERROR 2656: Column ... does not exist"

Issue

When viewing a published workbook, the following error might occur:

Session Ended by Server
An unexpected error occurred on the server. If you continue to receive this error please contact your Tableau Server Administrator.

Tableau Exception: ERROR 2656: Column <name of column> does not exist
Unable to connect to the server "<server name>". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

Environment

Tableau Server

Resolution

  1. Open Tableau Desktop. 
  2. Navigate to Server > Open Workbook
  3. Sign into Tableau Server. 
  4. Select the affected workbook and click Open
  5. Right-click and remove any dimension or measure that appears with a red mark. 
  6. Adjust the workbook as necessary, and then republish. 

Cause

A column in the underlying database changed its name.The workbook is still referencing the old name that no longer exists.
