Error "Tableau Data Engine Error: 4: Invalid Command: database: Path does not exist." Accessing Data Sources with Non-ASCII Names

Published: 29 Apr 2015
Last Modified Date: 30 Aug 2016

Issue

After upgrading Tableau Server to 9.0, Tableau Server data sources with non-ASCII names are unusable.  Errors occur for refresh extract tasks, when downloading the data source or a workbook connected to a published data source, or connecting to the published data source in Tableau Desktop:

Tableau Data Engine Error: 4: Invalid Command: database: Path does not exist.

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Published data sources with non-ASCII characters in the name

Resolution

Republish the data source.

Cause

Tableau Server backup turns non- ASCII characters in published data source names into #xxxx, making the path too long for Windows to properly handle.
