Error "Tableau Data Engine Error: 4: bad magic number" Opening Workbook

When opening a workbook connected to an extract, the following error occurs:
An error occurred while communicating with the Tableau Data Extract data source <Full Name of Extract File> Tableau Data Engine Error: 4: bad magic number
Unable to connect to the file "<Full Filepath of Extract File>".
Check that the file exists and that you have sufficient access privileges for it


Tableau Desktop


  1. Open a separate instance of Tableau Desktop.
  2. Create a new extract, identical to the extract of the affected workbook.
  3. Save the extract with the default file extension.
  4. Open the workbook producing the error.
  5. Use the Locate the extract option to direct Tableau Desktop to use the new extract created above.


Tableau Desktop cannot locate the Tableau Data Extract (.tde) file. The file extension of the extract has been changed from a ".tde" to an unsupported file extension or the extract has also been moved or deleted from its original location.
